Why is my X Box Live lagging so bad?

Everywhere in my house, including the basement, i get great reception from my in-home wifi. I get great reception on my laptop, my iPod, and my xbox live.

Xbox live worked fine until we got a new modem and router. Then it started lagging like crazy. I would literally see my reception bar go from 4 bars(green) to one (red) in a heartbeat, and then back up again. However, when i go to the Xbox dashboard and test the connection, it always turns up with 3 or 4 bars, unwavering. only during xbox live gameplay does it fluctuate.

Again, new modem, new router. Wifi in the basement is great EXCEPT for xboxlive gameplay.

could it be that the new modem and router cannot support the xbox live gameplay? or is their signal just weaker than the previous ones? or is it something else?

How Live works is you connect to Xbox live (which may not be near you depending where you are) then connects to the host (which also may be far away) this may have to do with how well your xbox connects to the modem, how it connects to XBL, or, in your case, how it connects to other hosts. Also the x box does not have the best WiFi connection, so having your Xbox directly connected would be the best way to eliminate lag.

You may also want to contact Xbox support or your internet provider for more help.

While it could be possible that your new router doesn't support NAT this is extremely unlikely just because its brand new. What is more likely is that your Networks Ping is very low. With online gaming it is less about your raw bandwidth and more about the networks pings. The ping and and latency basically correspond the Stability of your network. To check your ping go to speedtest.net If you ping is above 100 your gonna start running into problems playing online, remember the lower the better.

one of the problems could be that your xbox is on the wrong channel, i've forgotten totally how to change it :L but i think you can change your router settings on your pc, if you can, change it to channel 7 or something that isn't v. busy, if it is only like this on Call of Duty MW2 its because your connection to their servers is poor or your router/ISP is not compatible

try unplugging and plugging your internet back in. otherwise, check you xbox connections. if its wireless, something could be wrong with your internet.
