1)You get RROD cause the 360 overheats and the internal solder holding the chip melts on the chip rendering it useless.
2)Why: Cause M$ created a faulty design. The ventilation system isn't right and adequate. The fan also is weak. The 360 just doesn't dissipate heat well. Now add to this the fact that previous chips weren't quiet heat resistant and drew more power... M$ created the RR to show that there is a hardware failure. Since the chip fails, the RR crop up and so the name 'RROD' as after that the thing is useless unless the chip is replaced.
3)Just take adequate breaks from time to time and see that the 360 is in a region where air circulation is proper. Don't keep it very near a hot source like a TV... Just see that the thing doesn't get too hot. That is all you can do.

Why/how? Because there was a design flaw in early models of the Xbox 360 console -- it generated too much heat and didn't have enough cooling (fans and heatsinks) to get rid of the heat. Eventually, that leads to either the 3 red lights or 1 red light and and E74 error.
Microsoft has made design changes to address the problem, and the latest models of the 360 run a lot cooler than early models, so are much less likely to get the problem.
How much should you play? Don't worry about it. Play as much as you want. If it does happen to break, Microsoft will replace it for free as long as your console is less than three years old.

well, the newer xbox 360's do not get it.
its only the older ones.
but if you are not careful you can get it by leaving it on, or moving the 360 around while the disk is in it.
and play it has long as you want, no big deal.
you can also by a cooler for it.
