Question:
Xbox 360 MTU issues, unfixable but need advice?

Hi, I recently got a place at Greenwich University, and I am using the internet that they have there (cable-com, www.cable-com.co.uk) I have been using it for a while and it is reasonable. I hooked it up to xbox live and began playing for a while, I then brought a 12 month xbox live gold membership + 1 extra free month from amazon, I put the code in and voila it worked fine, i turned it off then decided to play gears of war, suddenly it wouldn't work, I kept on getting an error message about the MTU settings, I changed it to 1450 then 1500 and 1430 now its back to 1500. I don't think any of you would be able to help me out with this problem but could you tell me whether it is likely to be either:
a) a problem with the xbox 360 console
b) a problem with my MTU settings (despite being changed several times)
c) a problem with my internet provider
d) other
Thanks a lot, this is very frustrating.

Sounds like the internet provider to me. If it is run by the university, the network administrators usually tone down the MTU settings to put a damper on the bandwidth "hogs". Cable internet is usually a shared connection as well, if a large number of people get online at the same time the ping usually skyrockets. That could also factor in as well but it pops up an xbox live failed error not a MTU error....

I would try unplugging your router and resetting your modem while the router is turned off. Once your modem is all lit up, plug the router back in. If that doesn't work, call the internet provider and ask them.

It's most likely a problem with the provider for your internet considering that the Xbox console wouldn't affect live connection. If it worked originally for your MTU settings then there's no need to change it.

It might even be an unrelated effect of using xbox live at your school. Check with tech support and administrators at your school.
