I know this is late but i have searched for help for 3 days as my son did the same thing and he had a lot of work for his final a level exams on usb, so for anyone with the same problem, most importantly do not save anything new to usb, try a few recovery programs get what you can and save to pc not usb, he tried recuva the day it happened and only showed 28 files unreadable, then tried a few more which found various work and pictures saved it all to pc, then he formated the usb in the pc then did recuva again and it showed over a thousand files and amazingly everything was restored to its former glory!!!!!!!! thank goodness so if you make the mistake of putting the wrong usb in xbox and configure it, dont panic there are some good programs out there to help.......

You may try some external hard drive data recovery program
http://tinyurl.com/external-hdd-recovery
It helped me last time. Hope that it helps you too.

I've been using all sorts of external drive with xbox for years and nothing like tat has ever happened so I have to call user error on this one. (like unplugging it while it's on or something) Check the hard drives recycle bin (yes, it has one, hidden) when you plug it in your recycle bin on your PC might show being full. try running chkdsk to have it recover lost files. (they will be unnamed in a hidden folder if it does find anything)

Every time you hook up an external storage source to the xbox, it formats it, and then uses the space for xbox 360 system crap and your downloads and installs.
Sorry bro...

No, I don't believe so
For future reference NEVER hook any form of external hard drive or flash drive to an Xbox if you plan on saving any of the documents on the drives. The Xbox reformers the drive to work with the console, which deletes anything that is not compatible

I think it's done
You can try using this recovery program called recuva. Read more about it. It help me recover lost picture when I deleted it on my camera once. Or try going to a computer expert. Goodluck
