How do I fix A "NAT Type Strict" issue with Xbox Live?
2011-01-06 10:07:19 UTC
I have tried everything XBox support has to offer. Still No Change in my NAT Type. Here's the crazy thing we have 3 Xbox's in the house and 1 works perfect "NAT Type Open" The other 2 have the NAT Type Strict Problem. We have a wireless Linksys E2000 Router with a seperate Cable Modem per Xbox. They said I needed to get rid of the netgear gateway we had originally because "We (Xbox) has had trouble configuring the NAT in Gateway units. Did Not help one bit. My Cable Internet Provider is Charter Communications. Thank You.

If you have a seperate cable modem per xbox then jsut run the xbox straight off of the modem. it will be completely open that way. and when you need the internet on some other devices you can just plug the router back into the modem and use them.

basically if your about to game just plug your xbox into the modem and restart the modem. if your not gaming then unplug it.

There are no settings on the router to change Network Address Translation (NAT) from strict to open. This process allows all of the computers on your home network to use one IP address. Using the NAT capability of the Belkin router, you can access the Internet from any computer on your home network without having to purchase more IP addresses from your ISP.

The NAT may restrict connection for game consoles and VPN connections. When it does that we have to open few ports on the router for that particular device.

Game consoles for example: X-Box or PS3 is set up to change its NAT settings automatically the time it connects to a network such as modem, router or T1 connection.

Please follow the steps given below to configure your Xbox with the router:

Please contact Microsoft and assign static IP address and DNS on the Xbox. The static IP address should be assigned in the range of the router. For example:

192.168.2.200. The IP address you assign should not be used by any other device on the network. Please confirm if the ports to be opened are the following:

- UDP 88.

- UDP 3074.

- TCP 3074.

1) Please follow the instructions given below to forward the port numbers for Xbox on the router:

- Please open the Internet Explorer and in the address bar type in "192.168.2.1" and "Enter". The computer should be connected to the router with an ethernet cable.

- Leave the password blank and click on "submit".

- Click on "Virtual server" under the "Firewall".

- Enter the port number under "Inbound port" & "Private port".

- Enter the Static IP address of the Xbox under the "Private IP address".

- Check the "Enable" box and click on "Apply changes".

2) Please follow the instructions given below to enable UpnP on the router:

- Log on to the router web interface at http://192.168.2.1

- By default, the password is blank.

- Click on System setting under "Utilities".

- Against the heading "UPNP Enabling", choose "Enable".

- Click on "Apply changes".

Note: The NAT feature on the router is enabled by default.
