Just bought an original xbox 360 core w/ hard drive, however the hard drive is damaged, causing red ring when plugged in. The xbox works fine without it though. Rather than spend the money on a new hard drive, can I use a USB flash drive to save my game progress? Will this work on the older models? Do I need to install any system updates in order to do so? Or can I simply format a new flash drive to be compatible? Thanks for your help!

You can do this. In fact, you can save your entire player card onto a flash drive. Just make sure that the drive is HUGE (greater than 32GB). Also, you must format the drive with the Xbox first, and then you will be able to use it for this manner. However, if you put the drive into a computer, it will come up with a lot of no-extension files inside. Never try to access these, because if you do, you may very well corrupt the flash drive and have to reformat it the next time you put it into the console. Doing so will erase your data and you will have to do a lot of work to get it back. This happened to a friend of mine, so I'm just warning you that this can happen.

You can just format a new flash drive, the only requirement is that the flash drive have at least 2 gigabytes of space on it.

My friend does it but I don't know much details I know you can move stuff from your harddrive to a flash drive so I don't see why not
