Question:
How can I upgrade to an Elite without the migration kit?

I was thinking about using a memory card instead, but I was wondering if this would create any problems. Since I have Xbox Live, will I be able to transfer my account this way? If not, and I have to recover my account on the new hard drive, will I be able to use the save data I transferred from the other one?

We used the memory card instead of the transfer cable.

(you can't transfer music) because we worried if there was an error during the transfer process ( instructions warn it is a possibility) we would lose everything since it isn't copying it.

You will recover your gamertag. Your game saves will work fine, but content downloaded from live will have to be redownloaded (it is free, your live account remembers what you have downloaded) and you will always have to be on live to acces downloaded content, this is true even with the transfer cable or if you have a repair order and get sent a new console (because of license issues).
