you can't change how old you are so you won't be able to get the dashboard ads

BUT, i've read on the xbox.com forums that Microsoft is working on a patch that would allow people with "children" accounts to be able to use Messenger, so hopefully they will release it some time soon (i have the same problem)

according to the forums, once you're a child account, you'll always be a child account. If the parent releases your account, then you won't be able to do anything.

As he said, they're working on a fix for the Windows Messenger thing.

If you want the other Live features, the parent account will need to log into the family settings on the dashboard and enable the stuff.

You can change it to the family account by first clicking the gamertag (the picture), clicking gamer zone, and changing it to family, which is for kids. You can then go to settings and you can choose if he can talk to others, only friends, or nobody. There a lot of things. Go through every single one on settings on the dashboard. You can also delete his gamer profile, but I don't suggest that. Or, just take away the headset and allow him to play with others but not talk to them. Good luck.
