Okay, do not have Xbox live, but i was able to get the update for backwards compatibility by downloading the update on a DVD.

What I want to know is can i get the game updates without xbox live? ( ie halo 3 maps, guitar hero tracks) i know you need points or something to get most game updates, but sometimes they have free ones.

Also, can i get the new xbox experience without x-LIVE the same way as the bc update? And if I don't like the new interface, can I switch back to the original?

You're right that some updates are free. There are also several patches which are always free. ie..iPod patch.

The new Xbox experience has to be downloaded from Xbox live which is where you get all the updates.

My suggestion would be if you have a modem, which I'm sure you do, un-hook it from your CPU and into your Xbox and sign up for a 1 month subscription to xbox live. Get your updates and patches and play some games for a month and then let it go. You can either buy it when you connect or you can buy subscription cards for 1,3,12 months at a time from a Best Buy or Frys or something like that. There are a lot of updates for some games so the $10 bucks for a month is a good investment for your $300 xbox.

Once you've updated, there's no turning back.

Also, you can't get any of the Halo 3 and Guitar Hero : World Tour updates without having x-box live because those specific updates were made FOR x-box Live.

Hope that helps!
