Can you play on xbox live with a xbox 360 core system?

yes, you just need to manage your memory even moreso. Watch what you download, and make sure that Xbox Live Arcade titles aren't set to automatically download.
Also, you won't be able to download extra content, such as the two new Halo maps, or any of the new Gears maps.
but hey, you can still play online. I'm not entirely sure about playing original Xbox games though.
